Had to cull Charlie the silky rooster today.
I won’t really miss the cranky little bastard but I’m still a bit sad. I’ve done that particular deed a few times now and it hasn’t gotten any easier.

I often wonder if having to participate directly in that part of the process would reaffirm for me that it’s just the food chain, and perfectly natural, or drive me to vegetarianism.
Not to imply that you ate him though. It’s just I’ve never killed anything besides a fly before, except this hysterical squirrel on the freeway once, but I don’t think that counts in this case because it wasn’t premeditated. (And I suppose you could count Gabriel, but I refuse to look at it that way).
I wonder if I could do it. I bet I could. I mean, ya gotta eat, right? Who wants to eat clover and bugs forever? Nice breast of rabbit, that’s what I’m talkin’ about.
What am I talking about?

We did not eat him he was very sick. One of the other chickens beat him up very badly and then seems to have pulled off his uh.. o-ring. So there was no chance he was going to make it. We gave him overnight to make sure but it was done.
Also the silkes have like 21424312 toes each, it’s sooooo disgusting… I don’t think I could eat a pet, even one i don’t like.
I think if we had a bunch more of them, and we didn’t name them I could probably cull them for food. One of our friends has raised meat birds and he said they are pretty high up their on the stupid food chain. (or is that down there..) They are bread specifically to grow quickly so they won’t live long lives even if you don’t uh.. harvest them.
He is also the person that ate the first rooster we had to cull because it was attacking Epe. One day it just kind of went off ;p.
Also it might be some kind of urban legend, but if you don’t eat anything but lean rabbit you apparently die from horrible nutritional related causes… yay..
